What We Do

Molly Stark Elementary Pod

The Seedlings Program provides a nurturing afterschool environment for children living in poverty in Bennington County. The program is multi-year, working with students entering the first grade through their transition into middle school. Seedling’s provides consistent programming to build academic skill and social skills, creativity and resiliency through one-on-one academic tutoring, enrichment activities to explore and enhance creativity and opportunities to observe and practice appropriate behaviors.

We strive to build community awareness and support around the issues of childhood poverty in Bennington. Our goals are to increase self-confidence and habits associated with academic and life success through consistent, one-on-one interactions with adult volunteers. By being fun, nurturing and supportive, children choose to engage in the program.

Our model includes pods of six to eight children that meet three times per week (Mon, Tues, Thurs) after school for 1.5 hours during the school year. Daily activities include a mix of tutoring, games, hands-on activities, conversations with volunteers, a healthy nutritious snack. Students work with individual tutors trained and hired through the Tutorial Center throughout the school year. Each student receives 30 minutes of individualized tutoring each day we meet. We strive for one-on-one student to volunteer ratio and provide a diverse background of ages for students to interact with each day. Please consider visiting to see if you are interested in joining the Seedlings Program as a volunteer.
